Rosina, the energetic matron of Putkinotko's rental farm, has plenty to do since morning, but the rest of the family would just like to laze around. After all, it creates screams. Life is poor, but Rosina has found a way to earn money. The host Juutas is reluctant, but Rosina's brother Mauno agrees to at least consider the proposal. On the way to town, Rosina is mocked, and, as is her character, gets angry again.
Making hay in Putkinotko is progressing slowly. Juutas sends the children to work, but he goes to the mill himself and gets flour for half the price. Mauno and his family come with Rosina to Putkinotko. Having been fired, Mauno plans to start burning liquor under the cover of the forests and attracts Juutas as a partner.
Käkriäinen's landlord, bookseller Muttinen, is coming to Putkinotko for the summer. He is dissatisfied with the way Juutas has taken care of the room, but nevertheless arranges a pleasant surprise for him in the morning. After all, Juutas agrees to be Mauno's partner in drinking alcohol.
