Inland Paraná, 1930s. A rich Italian immigrant, Giácomo Nerone, went there to create what would be one of the largest farms in the region. Giácomo orders an agricultural engineer, an acquaintance of his, Mário Leonardo D’Ângelo, to come from Italy, poor but ambitious and unscrupulous. After being bitten by a snake, Giácomo dies without being helped by Mário. Once the farmer is dead, he buries him and assumes his identity. Mário, now Giácomo, tells his own family in Italy that Mário Leonardo D’Ângelo has died. The “new” Giácomo gets married, becomes even richer and has a son, who he names Mário, his real name. Mário, the son, becomes an idealistic musician, but does not have his father's approval in his career. Repudiated, Mário leaves his parental home and moves to São Paulo, where, during the following years, he tries to survive as a violinist.
