In the lands of the border between Arabs and Christians, in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula, some Saracen bandits have captured Arnau, a Christian nobleman. Badly injured, they take him through a forest and, by chance, stop at the house of Agra, the witch. While Agra feeds them, her daughter, Elna, approaches Arnau. They only see each other for a moment, but an attraction so strong is born between the two that, both, they will never be able to forget each other. Outside the Agra hut, the Saracens try to sell Arnau to an Arab gentleman from Córdoba, Yazid, who is traveling through that land. Yazid stays with Arnau and makes a bet with a colleague that he will turn that primitive man into a sensitive person. Meanwhile, in Christian lands, Arnau's family, his wife Sancia, the two daughters and Odalric, the brother-in-law and the most powerful noble in the region, give him up for dead. Odalric's wife, Garsa, has not been able to give her husband an heir and is jealous of Sancia's two daughters. Sancia envies Garsa who has a husband who loves her. She was never happy with Arnau.
Arnau confronts Odalric; accuses him of wanting to kill him and of the count's death. He has no proof of this, but from there the hatred between the two brothers-in-law is inevitable. Arnau, following the teachings of the noble Yazid, takes care of his lands, makes them produce and gives rights to the farmers. The innovations are frowned upon by the other nobles and even by Abbot Ató. Odalric hires Mamburg, a mercenary of sorts, to spy on Arnau's every move. He sees with disgust how Arnau is becoming more popular with the population. Aided by the abbess and Mamburg, he sets traps for him to discredit him. Meanwhile, Arnau manages to discover where Elna is hiding, takes her out of the convent, abandons his wife and daughters and goes to live with her. Garsa can no longer make Odalric believe that she is pregnant and goes to the witch for help. The witch makes her see that if she has not become pregnant it is not her fault, but her husband's. Garsa finds in Mamburg the ideal man to get pregnant. Odalric also visits Agra. He wants to know how to defend himself against Arnau without arousing suspicion. Agra warns him not to spill his brother-in-law's blood if he does not want the child Garsa carries in her womb to be born dead. He advises her that the only way to get rid of Arnau is to lie.
Odalric has Arnau captured and, with false accusations, subjects him to a fraudulent trial that condemns him to exile. But, hidden from everyone, he has him locked up in a dungeon in his castle. Sancia finds solace in Ermengol, a comedian who arrives at the castle. They fall in love and Sancia changes: she faces her brother Odalric and, with Ermengol's help, gets Arnau out of the dungeon, even if he doesn't love him. Arnau is not ready to go into exile: he wants to take revenge on Odalric.
Arnau says goodbye to his daughters and, accompanied by his most faithful servant, Bernat, hides to prepare revenge. Elna couldn't follow Arnau, because Agra prevented it. Odalric does not dare to have him killed for fear of the witch's threat and has Mamburg disguised as a false Arnau and orders him to commit atrocities against the peasants and nobles loyal to Arnau so that they themselves will be the ones to kill him. Different and contradictory versions emerge among the people about Arnau: for some he is a murderer, and for others he is the only one who can free them from the arbitrariness of Odalric. The positive view of Arnau intensifies when Ermengol, who reveals himself to Sancia as a nobleman from another county, also decides to take on the role of Arnau, form an army and conquer land from the Arabs in the name of the new count of Barcelona, Berenguer, in theory an ally of Odalric. Odalric is called to Barcelona by the new count. And he goes there hoping to make pacts that might be favorable to him. But there he is accused of setting up a fraudulent trial against Arnau. He is condemned to find Arnau and restore his honor. Odalric is deeply humiliated.
Meanwhile, Arnau falls into a depression. Powerless, he renounces himself and, accompanied by Bernat, heads for exile. On a pilgrimage he meets the fake Arnau who hides Mamburg. They fight and Arnau cuts off the mercenary's hand. Odalric only thinks about killing Arnau. But the child is not yet born. Mamburg decides to kill Arnau on his own. He tries treacherously but Bernat intervenes and dies. Arnau, desolate, joins the group of pilgrims who are going to meet a saint. When Arnau talks to him he is surprised: it is Yazid, who, poor and a fugitive, now feels like a free man. Before leaving, Yazid encourages Arnau not to give up his freedom either. Agra sends Elna, who is pregnant, upriver to meet Arnau. Mamburg, who is spying on them, warns Odalric. La Garsa has already had the child and Odalric feels free to kill Arnau. Arnau and Elna are at the sources of the river. Elna gives birth to a girl. Odalric also arrives at the springs and tries to kill Arnau. They fight and when Arnau is about to kill him, he spares his life. Odalric, however, betrays him before the eyes of Ermengol, who cannot help it.
