In Grenslanders, a deeply traumatized girl of African origin is found wandering around in the polders of the borderland between Belgium and Holland. Tara, a Rotterdam police detective, and Bert, an Antwerp psychiatrist, try to get the girl to speak. They soon get the feeling that the innocent looking borderland and the people who live there are hiding more secrets than the tourist brochures suggest...

In the Flemish polders a wandering African girl is found. Her identity is a mystery. Belgian psychiatrist Bert Dewulf is send to the borderland between Flanders and Zeeland in the Netherlands to take care of the girl. In the mean time Tara Dessel, a Dutch police officer of Surinamese origin and new to the area, investigates a shooting on a little ghost ship on the banks of the Westerschelde. Soon it becomes clear, the two cases on both sides of the border are connected.

Bert is saved from certain death by Tara. He increasingly gains the trust of his African patient, Afi. She turns out to be the victim of a gang of ruthless human traffickers. However, when an anonymous informant puts Tara on the trail of the 'Lorren Draaiers', a historic gang of smugglers and pirates, no one takes her trail seriously.

Is there a connection between Afi's traumatic fear of snakes and the snake tattoo on the neck of the dead Chinese? The only ones who really believe it are Tara and Bert. Together they search for the mysterious 'Admiral', who is said to be the head of the smuggling gang. But in the Borderland they remain outsiders. They are increasingly encountering misunderstanding and opposition among the local population. And then Afi takes a completely unexpected turn...

Now that Afi has revealed her deepest secret, Tara and Bert argue about her future. Bert comes to realize that for Tara there are parallels between Afi's situation and that of Shirin, the young asylum seeker she knew in Rotterdam. In the meantime, there are rumblings in the environment of the Lorren Draaiers. Tommy Dingemanse is captured and treated as a traitor. When Afi threatens to expose the true identity of the 'Admiral', the Lorren Draaiers brutally intervene.

After the spectacular counter-reaction from the Lorren Draaiers, Tara also loses her most reliable informant. Bert must answer to the police for his misconduct in Antwerp. But tensions are also rising among the Lorren Draaiers. There a battle erupts over the succession of the 'Admiral'. When Bert confesses his wrongdoings to Tara, she also shows herself vulnerable. With renewed confidence, they continue their struggle and track down a group of refugee children.

For Tara, the past keeps repeating itself. The more she gets stuck in a case, the more victims there are. When the long-simmering conflict with her boss erupts violently, she is suspended. Meanwhile, an arrest warrant is issued against Bert for inappropriate behavior with his patient and Tierenteyn increasingly behaves like an unguided missile. Furious and humiliated, he sets out for an ultimate showdown. Share via whatsappShare via facebookShare via twitterShare via emailCopy Link
