The action begins in 1936 and ends in September 1939, at the start of the Second World War. In the fictional village of Baie-d'Esprit, located in Bas-Saint-Laurent near Kamouraska, lives Bella Cormoran, a pretentious, proud and haughty woman. The eldest daughter of a bourgeois family, she lives in the Cormoran manor and estate with her doctor brother a few years her junior, Pacifique, a tormented but appreciated person, and her sister Angélique, sweet and naive, married to Germain Lafond who is rather boorish. Bella experiences a traumatic experience that will change her greatly: despite her advanced age, she becomes a single mother following her meeting with Wolfgang Osnabrück, a visiting German geologist, with whom she falls in love. Just as World War II begins, Bella chooses to take on her motherhood, in full view of everyone. The ghost of René Cormoran, brother of Bella, Pacifique and Angélique, who died a few years earlier in Quebec under nebulous circumstances, still lurks. His widow, Ginette Durivage, an outcast from Anse-au-Maudit, tries to have her rights recognized. The village butcher, Clément Veilleux, created an organization called the Blue Shirts, which actively advocated Nazism. Proud of a certain resemblance to Benito Mussolini, Veilleux is also inspired by Adrien Arcand and his fascist ideologies. Viateur Bernier succeeds, not without difficulty, his father Théodule as mayor and business manager. The Labrecque couple, who left Montreal in 1929 at the start of the Great Depression, also experienced several adventures in Baie d’Esprit.
